This paper has presented an overview of a vision system designed to track multiple vehicles using a camera mounted on a moving vehicle, for the purposes of collision alert. The methods employed have been described and preliminary results for model-based tracking demonstrated. The intended application is collision alert, in which an automated system will warn the driver of any impending collision. Current work is concerned with improving the robustness of the background and local motion determination, and development of improved filtering techniques.
